WASHINGTON – The No. 9/13 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Marquette University Golden Eagles 3-0 on Friday evening at Shaw Field in both teams' BIG EAST Conference opener. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 5-2-1 for the season as well as 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST.

• "I thought Marquette opened the game really well. They were causing problems, they were in our half and they were picking up second balls as well. But once the game settled, it was just a complete performance by our guys in terms of professionalism and in how they approached a lot of the situations which was really good to see. Going into BIG EAST play can make you lose your discipline. And I thought our guys did a great job of not letting it affect them. I was really pleased with the mentality of the guys."

How it Happened

• Marquette was active early on, but as the game settled in, the Hoyas took control.
• Georgetown got on the board in the 17th minute when senior Mateo Ponce Ocampo sent in a ball from the left side. Classmate Matthew Van Horn came flying into the fray and managed to chest the ball in to make it 1-0.
• GU continued to dominate possession and went into the break leading 1-0.
• The Blue & Gray added another in the 73rd minute when junior Mitchell Baker dispossessed a Marquette defender. Baker tapped it to Ponce Ocampo who sent it right back to the Australian striker, and he found the back of the net.
• The final score came in the 78th minute from freshman Noah Strellnauer. A ball bounced off a defender and to the feet of Strellnauer, who connected from the top of the box to make it 3-0, which would stand as the final.

Of Note

• Georgetown outshot Marquette, 13-4, and had eight shots on goal to the Golden Eagles' two.
• The Hoyas managed 11 corners in the game, while MU tallied two.
• Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with two saves and the shutout to his credit.
• Strellnauer's goal was the first of his career.
