Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5/10 Georgetown Blanks No. 10/6 Oregon State

WASHINGTON – The No. 5/10 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a trio of first-half goals to pick up the 3-0 win over the No. 10/6 Oregon State University Beavers on Friday evening at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-0-1 on the year, while the Beavers drop to 2-1-1 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "We're five games into the season, and the guys are just getting more and more used to each other. One of the benefits of playing against teams like Oregon State and Duke, and the schedule we put together in Maryland coming up is that you have to be really good with how you solve problems, otherwise you don't get looks. And so it's been great that we've been able to get the offensive production we have against two teams the last two games that are two of the top of the country."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas struck early when senior Matthew Van Horn found classmate Mateo Ponce Ocampo in the middle of the field. Ponce Ocampo passed it to junior David Urrutia at the corner of the box who fired. His shot deflected off of a defender and went in to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.
  • Just four minutes later, senior Eric Howard had space and lofted a ball into the box. He found the head of junior Mitchell Baker who got it past the Oregon State keeper as the Hoyas took the 2-0 lead.
  • Baker wasn't done as he found the back of the net one more time. Assists from senior Matthew Helfrich and junior Jack Brown allowed the striker to score on the breakaway as the Blue & Gray went into the half with the 3-0 advantage.
  • The Hoyas continued to control the momentum in the second half.
  • Oregon State had one late opportunity, but the defense stood strong and held on for the convincing 3-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Oregon State, 16-9, and had six shots on goal to the Beavers' four.
  • The Hoyas managed nine corners in the game, and OSU tallied two.
  • Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with four saves to his credit and his third-consecutive clean sheet.
  • Georgetown handed Oregon State its first loss of the season.
  • This marked GU's third ranked opponent on the year.
Up Next
  • Georgetown will head out for another ranked matchup on Monday as the squad travels to No. 2/2 Maryland for a 7 p.m. matchup at Ludwig Field in College Park, Maryland.
