Georgetown Baseball Memorable Moments

2018 BIG EAST Championships
The 2018 team became the fourth team in program history to make the BIG EAST Championship Tournament.

With several current Independent League and Minor League Baseball players on the 2018 roster, the Hoyas set a program single-season record in saves (16) and rank third all-time with 409 strikeouts.

The team also posted a 16-5 record at home, tying the 2006 squad for most home wins since the turn of the century.

Hoyas Upset No. 12 Virginia on the Road
Simon Mathews pitched five perfect innings and three Hoya pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout as Georgetown upset No. 12 Virginia 1-0 on the road at Davenport Field.

AC Carter provided all the offense for the Hoyas, launching a high, solo home run to left field in the fourth inning.

Virginia only managed singles in the sixth and eighth innings before David Ellingson (pictured) fired a perfect ninth, ending the game with a strikeout and earning the save.
David Ellingson had 0.75 ERA with nine saves last season.

St. Baldrick's
Throughout the 2014 season, the Hoyas raised funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

Following Georgetown's game against Xavier on April 5, every member of the squad shaved their head.

First Game at Citi Field
On Sunday, March 29, 2009, the Hoyas played St. John's in the first game ever played at Citi Field - the home of the New York Mets. The contest, which was a home game for the Blue & Gray, served as a soft opening for the stadium before the start of the Major League Baseball season.

Georgetown defeated the Red Storm 6-4 behind eight strong innings on the mound from Tim Adleman. Trailing 4-2, GU scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead and Jack Bender pitched a perfect ninth for the save. More than 22,000 people were in attendance.

The Hoyas collected a number of firsts at the brand new ballpark. Adleman threw the first pitch, Tom Elliott collected the first hit, Sean Lamont hit the first home run, Dan Capeless had the first double and Greg Pustizzi had the first RBI.

Playing the Nationals
On February 28, 2008, Georgetown played the Washington Nationals in an exhibition game at the Nationals' Spring Training home in Viera, Florida. The Hoyas lost 15-0, but it was worth the experience playing against a handful of major league players, including Dmitri Young, Ronnie Belliard, Austin Kearns, Jason Bergmann and Ryan Zimmerman.

Senior left-hander Michael Gaggioli got the start and struck out four Washington batters over two innings of work.

The Hoyas received hits from four sophomores, including doubles by Tom Elliott and Dan Capeless.

First Intercollegiate Game
On May 10, 1870, the College Nine played Georgetown's first officially recorded game against an intercollegiate opponent, falling 23-17 to Columbian College.

Team sports emerged on the Georgetown campus after the Civil War. Baseball, a popular pastime in the troop encampments of the two opposing armies, spread rapidly to college campuses. By 1869, two rival intramural baseball clubs had formed at Georgetown. A select team was chosen from among the two teams to form the College Nine, for the purpose of competing against neighboring institutions.
