Louis Orr joined the Georgetown men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in June 2017 and moved into the role of special assistant to the head coach prior to the 2022-23 season.
ORR ON THE HILLTOP
- Orr has been a part of Head Coach Patrick Ewing’s staff since his inaugural season and helped the program hit significant early milestones, including capturing the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament win, a league-leading eighth for the Hoyas.
- Orr served as an assistant coach for his first five seasons before transitioning to his current position.
- In five seasons, the Hoyas picked up three major awards from the BIG EAST Conference, with a pair of recipients of the league’s Sportsmanship Award (2020 - Jagan Mosely, 2022 - Donald Carey).
- In four available postseasons, the Hoyas earned an automatic selection to the 2021 NCAA Tournament as BIG EAST Tournament Champions and earned a berth to the 2019 National Invitation Tournament. The 2021 NCAA Tournament bid was GU’s first since the 2014-15 season.
- In five years as a member of Ewing's staff, Orr has helped the Hoyas to eight wins over opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
ROAD TO GU: LOUIS ORR
- Prior to arriving on the Hilltop, Orr was an assistant coach with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association. His team captured the regular season title and first CBA championship during the 2016-17 campaign.
- Previously, Orr served as the head coach at Bowling Green State University from 2007-14.
- He led the Falcons to a pair of postseason appearances and was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after guiding BGSU to a 19-14 record and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in his second season.
- Prior to Bowling Green, Orr served as the head coach at Seton Hall from 2001-06, where he compiled an 80-69 record.
- He was named the BIG EAST Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2003, becoming the first person in league history to receive league honors as both a player and a coach.
- Orr guided the Pirates to three postseason appearances, twice going to the NCAA Tournament (2004 and 2006) and once to the NIT (2003), in five seasons.
- Orr also served as the head coach at Siena College in 2000-01, guiding the Saints to a 20-11 record and a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title.
ORR: BIG EAST TIES & NBA CAREER
- Orr earned All-America and All-BIG EAST honors as a forward at Syracuse University from 1976 to 1980. As a player at Syracuse he made four trips to the NCAA Tournament.
- Orr’s freshman season was Hall of Fame Coach Jim Boeheim’s first season at Cuse and in four years, Syracuse had a record of 100-18. In the inaugural season of the BIG EAST Conference (1979-80), Orr was part of a team that went 5-1 in league action to be one of three regular season champions.
- Orr was the 28th selection in the 1980 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. In his rookie season with the Pacers, he helped the franchise to its first NBA Playoffs appearance since joining the NBA from the ABA.
- After two seasons with the Pacers, he played for the New York Knicks for six years, finishing his professional career in 1988. In his eight-year career, Orr made it to the NBA Playoffs four times.
- He was Head Coach Patrick Ewing’s teammate at the Knicks for Ewing’s first three years in the NBA.
- Orr came to Georgetown with a familiarity with the BIG EAST Conference as both a player and coach with stints as an assistant coach at Xavier (1991-94), Providence College (1994-96) and Syracuse (1996-2000) and was the head coach at Seton Hall from 2001-06.
- When Orr was named the Head Coach at Seton Hall in April 2001, he was the first former BIG EAST player to be named a head coach of BIG EAST men’s basketball team.
