Storrs, Conn. (Nov. 14, 1999) -- Georgetown's march to the 1999 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, which included wins over 14th-ranked St. John's and 15th-ranked Rutgers, fell short today as ninth-ranked and No. 5 seed Connecticut defeated the Hoyas 2-0 in the Championship Final at Morrone Field in Storrs, Conn.
UConn's (16-4-0) first goal was scored when Rui Fernandes passed the ball to Brent Rahim, who crossed it to Darren Lewis. Lewis took the cross and knocked it into the back of the net at 25:53. The Huskies iced the game off Chris Gbandi's direct kick, which curved into the right corner of the net at 77:34. Connecticut outshot the Hoyas 11-7, while each team posted one corner kick. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Purtill (Glastonbury, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) registered three saves and Huskie goalie Matt Chavlovich recorded five saves.
The No. 5 seeded Hoyas (11-9-1) advanced to the final game after posting a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed St. John's on Saturday, November 6, and a 2-0 upset win over No. 1 seed Rutgers on Friday, November 12. Georgetown tallied a 3-4-1 mark against ranked opponents in 1999 and now await an at-large bid to the 32-team NCAA Tournament field which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 15 at 9 p.m. EST.
