WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 7, 2000) -- The Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to ninth-ranked Pittsburgh, 4-2 on Sunday, October 7. The Hoyas are now 5-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh improves to 10-1-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Panthers scored first as Miles Dowiak found the net at 19:44. Georgetown answered at 26:12, when freshman Greg Freeburg (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena Polytechnic) was able to connect off a corner kick by senior Kyle Rakow (Dumfries, Va./CD Hylton). With only 1:29 left in the half, Pittsburgh got on the board again. Josh Whitham had a close-range shot that sophomore goalkeeper Brian O'Hagan (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) was able to block. Whitham followed his original shot and knocked in the rebound to put the Panthers up, 2-1.
At 49:42, the Hoyas knotted the game at two. Freeburg scored his second goal of the game, this time heading in his shot off passes from senior Peter Bachman (Columbia, Md./Howard) and junior Truls Engebretsen (Oslo, Norway/Berg Videregaaende). Pittsburgh regained the lead at 54:48, when Chris Churchill headed the ball to Pete Veltri, who placed the shot into the upper left-hand corner of the goal.
With 12 minutes left, the Hoyas thought they had tied the score at three. However, Kenny Owens' (Washington, D.C./Wilson) shot was called back when the referee called a foul, signaling that Owens had pushed the goalkeeper. At 80:05, Chad Porter scored the Panthers' final goal.
O'Hagan had eight saves for Georgetown, while Justin Gaul stopped seven shots for Pittsburgh.
The Hoyas will be in action again as they travel to Morgantown to take on BIG EAST-rival West Virginia on Wednesday, October 11, at 7 p.m.
