NOTRE DAME, IND. (Nov. 20) -- Georgetown University senior middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) were selected to All-BIG EAST Teams on Friday, November 17, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Kleinsorge was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, while Ward was tapped for the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. It is the second time that Kleinsorge has earned BIG EAST honors and the first time for Ward. Kleinsorge garnered BIG EAST All-Rookie Team accolades in 1999.
Kleinsorge had a terrific sophomore year. A key reserve for much of the season, Kleinsorge replaced GU's injured starting middle blocker and proved that she was up to the task. She ended the 2000 campaign ranked first in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage with a .422 average (124 kills, 26 errors and 232 attempts). Kleinsorge also led this year's squad in hitting percentage with .366 and in blocks with 90, including a team-high 23 solo blocks. In addition, she recorded 167 kills, 30 digs and five assists over 61 games. Kleinsorge had a career-best performance against Boston College on October 22, with 21 kills. In addition, she hit .655 for the match. Kleinsorge notched a career-best in blocks against American on November 1, when she registered 16 blocks, including 10 solo stops.
Ward, a unanimous pick for the All-Rookie Team, had an immediate impact on the Hoyas. She stepped into the starting setter's position upon her arrival on the Hilltop. Ward was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week five times this season for her outstanding play. Ward tops the Hoyas in assists with 1,232 or 11.96 per game. She ends the season ranked third in the BIG EAST in assists with an 11.96 average. Ward's statistics also include 162 digs, 103 kills, 46 blocks and a solid hitting percentage of .311 (104 kills with only 13 errors in 148 attempts). One of Ward's best performances was on September 23, against Pennsylvania, when she tallied a career-best 66 assists.
Georgetown posted a 16-13 overall record and a 6-5 mark in BIG EAST play for the 2000 season under the direction of second-year Head Coach Li Liu. Highlights from the season include two tournament titles, the Jefferson Cup Invitational and the Georgetown Classic, and the near upset of then-ranked #2 Long Beach State. The Hoyas won the BIG EAST Tournament in 1999 in Liu's first season and made their second-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
