The Georgetown University women's volleyball team had a tough weekend at McDonough Gym. The Hoyas lost 3-0 (15-6, 17-15, 15-12) to the University of Connecticut on Nov. 4, then dropped a 3-2 (6-15, 18-16, 14-16, 11-15, 8-15) decision to St. John's on Nov. 5. With the two BIG EAST losses, the Hoyas fall to 15-12 overall and 5-5 in Conference play. Connecticut moves to 16-11 and 5-4 in the league, and St. John's improves to 23-7 and 6-3.
The Hoyas got off to a slow start against the UConn Huskies and did not start building momentum until the second game. Unfortunately, Georgetown could not hold on for a victory in game two, and despite intense back and forth scoring in the third game of the contest, fell in three. Sophomore middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) continues to be a bright spot for GU, leading the Hoyas on offense with a team-high 13 kills in addition to three blocks, two digs and an assist. Kleinsorge was once again the most accurate on the team, hitting .400 for the match (13 kills with five errors in 20 attempts). Stephanie Schindel led Connecticut with a match-high 15 kills, 11 digs and six aces.
Freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) posted a match-high 34 assists to go with a team-high four aces. She also had six digs, three blocks (including two solo stops) over the three games. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Clara, Calif./Mater Dei) tallied 10 kills and seven digs, while Georgetown junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) added five kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces to the losing effort. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill's (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) stats included four kills, five digs, two aces and an assist, and junior Meg Mullen (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake) garnered eight digs, an ace and an assist. Freshman middle blocker Laura Hart (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) ended the match with five digs and an ace, and Meg Troller (Elmhurst, Ill./York) three kills.
Georgetown hoped to reverse its fortunes against The Storm of St. John's, but it was not to be. Despite taking The Storm to five games, the Hoyas could not hold on for the win. Kleinsorge and Gill, who was almost back to her old form, led the Hoyas with 16 kills. Kleinsorge also posted a match-high hitting percentage of .500 (16 kills with only one error in 30 attempts), in addition to a team-high seven blocks (including two solos). In addition to her 16 kills, Gill turned in 15 digs, a block and an assist. Olga Roudovski led St. John's with a match-high 25 kills as well as 12 digs and four aces.
Vtyurina had a team-high 18 digs on the day. She also notched 14 kills and tied a team-high in aces with three. Ward also turned in a match-high with 53 assists in addition to 10 digs, two blocks, two kills and two aces. Warner was the other Hoya with the team-high three aces. She also recorded eight kills, 11 digs, three blocks and four assists. Hart finished the match with 14 digs and an ace, while Mullen registered 12 digs, an ace and an assist.
St. John's hit .155 for the match, while the Hoyas' hitting percentage stood at .135. The Storm also held the advantage in team blocks, 15-8.
