Hoyas Drop George Mason In Women's Tennis

The Hoya women played George Mason on February 19 at the Burke Racquet Club in Burke, Va., and came home with 7-2 win over the Patriots. The victory improved the Hoyas' overall record to 2-2.

Against GMU, the Hoyas were staked to a 2-0 lead before the first point was played as Mason put only five of the requisite six players on the court receiving defaults at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Sarada Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) was the first Hoya to clinch a victory as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Suzy Ihnat at No. 2 singles. Lucky Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) then turned in her first singles victory of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 conquering of Emilie Katz, George Mason's No. 1 player.

Caroline Marshall (So., Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) was not as fortunate as she fell 6-4, 6-1 to Kaissa Jannson at No. 5 singles. Team captain Missy Mendes also encountered substantial resistance as she fell to Lulu Rodriguez 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

With the team score sitting at 4-2 in favor of the Hoyas, the final singles match and the potential clinching fifth team point was on the racquet of Megan Crotty as she faced Dari Thapayprasat at No. 3 singles. Crotty captured her first singles win of the 1999-2000 season fashioning a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory.

With Georgetown now possessing an insurmountable 5-2 lead, the two remaining matches of the evening were put on the court as the doubles competition began. At No. 1 doubles the Hoya duo of Hadley Muckerman (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Kim Wattrick (Fr., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) started slowly falling a break of serve behind to Mason's No. 1 team of Katz and Rodriquez. They rebounded strongly and actually forged a late lead. GMU however, forced a tiebreaker where the Hoyas saved two match points, and then moments later scored a satisfying 9-8(6) victory.

Meanwhile, at the No. 2 doubles position, Hoyas' Jean Roberts (Jr., Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Marshall also started slowly. They fell behind to the team of Thayaprasat and Ihnat, but recovered in time to capture a 9-7 victory. The final score of 7-2 was indicative a solid team effort as seven different team members contributed to the winning points, and was a dramatic reversal of the 2-7 loss Georgetown suffered one year ago at the hands of the Patriots.

The Hoyas' women's tennis team will be in action again this weekend as they tackle BIG EAST foe Connecticut on February 26 before targeting local-rival American on February 27. Both matches will take place at the Montclair Country Club in Dumfries, Va. The match versus the Huskies will begin at 3:15 p.m., while the contest against the Eagles will start at 4:45 p.m.
