The Hoyas fell to Division II power Barry University, 5-0, and lost to Davidson College, 6-3, while in South Florida this past week.
On Tuesday, March 7, the Hoyas played Barry at the BU campus in Miami Shores, Fla. The team match began with the doubles competition. At #1 doubles Lucky (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) and Sarada Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) were defeated 8-6 by Victoria Courmes and Valeria Papandrea. At No. 2, Hoyas' Hadley Muckerman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Kim Wattrick (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) were defeated 8-3 by Anna Hallbergson and Ashley Bradford. At #3 doubles Missy Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) and Sarah White (Fr., Westwood, Mass./Milton) were defeated by Jaime Margolis and Bojana Miludinovic, 8-5.
Facing a 3-0 deficit in a nine-point team match where the first team to five closes out the competition, the Hoyas quickly dropped two matches and lost the match 5-0. L. Ravindra was dismissed 6-0, 6-1 by Courmes at No. 1 singles. Miludinovic upended Lauren Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. With those two losses the other singles matches were stopped and the match ended with a final score of Barry-5 and Georgetown-0.
The Hoyas and the Davidson College Wildcats staged a grueling battle on the Palm Beach Community College courts in Boca Raton, Fla. on Wednesday, March 8 with the Wildcats earning the 6-3 victory.
The match began with the singles competition and Georgetown posted an early lead. The Hoyas notched wins by L. Ravindra at #1 singles, 7-5, 6-2 over Forbes Thompson, Caroline Marshall (So., Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) at #5 singles, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Anna Holland, and White at No. 6 singles, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Katie Brooks. Davidson countered by winning the #2 and #4 singles matches. Hoya No. 2 S. Ravindra fell 6-2, 7-5 to Elizabeth Moreno, and No. 4 L. Mendes lost 7-5, 6-3 to Kelly Cantrell.
Holding a 3-2 edge in the team standing, the Hoyas' M. Mendes looked to push the GU lead to 4-2 in her battle against Davidson freshman Yasmine Hilu at No. 3 singles. Mendes had a break point to take a 5-4 third set lead, but she was unable to convert. Mendes then dropped her final serve game to allow Hilu to even the team score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
Davidson swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches to score a 6-3 team victory. At No. 1 doubles the Ravindra's fell to Thompson and Moreno 8-3. Muckerman and Wattrick lost 8-2 to Holland and Hilu at No. 2. At #3 doubles M. Mendes and White fell 8-5 to Cantrell and Jones.
