WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 31) - Georgetown University's women's sailing team completed the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association (ICYRA) Women's Dinghy Championships in ninth place. The race was the first of three ICYRA Spring Championships and was held in St. Mary's, Md., on May 28-30. Georgetown finished the three-day event with 307 total points. Eighteen teams participated in the Championship and the winning team was Dartmouth, followed by Tufts, Boston University, Harvard, U.S.C., St. Mary's, Old Dominion and Brown.
In the "A" division the Georgetown team of Elizabeth Sampson (Fr., Larchmont, N.Y./Mamroneck) and Leah Williams (So., South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy) finished the competition in 10th place with a total of 160 points. Out of the eighteen individual races that made up the "A" division final result the Hoya sailors finished in first place twice. Harvard won the "A" division with 56 points.
The "B" division saw Georgetown finish in eighth place with a team comprised of captain Baye Emery (Jr., Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and crewmates Kate Hewson (Jr., Bay Head, N.J./St. Georges) and Shelly Wentworth (Fr., Centerville, Mass./Barnstable). The "B" division team ended the event with 147 total points, they started the regatta well finishing fourth, fifth and fourth in their first three races. Dartmouth won the "B" division with 59 points.
Up next for the Hoya sailing team will be the Team Race Nationals on May 31-June 2 at St. Mary's College. After that competition, the final National Championship Race is the Fleet Racing Nationals at King's Point, N.Y., on June 5-7.
