ST. MARY'S CITY, MD. Georgetown's coed sailing team finished second at the highly competitive 2000 Inter-Collegiate Yacht Racing Association/Ronstan Team Racing Championship held on May 31 - June 2 in St. Mary's City, Md. The event champion was not crowned until the final race of the day on Friday June 2, which pitted Georgetown and St. Mary's College. St. Mary's won the race on a disqualification of Georgetown and thus won the championship.
Georgetown and St. Mary's both emerged with identical 10-1 records after three days of sailing. In order to break the tie and crown a champion a sail-off took place between the Hoyas and the Seahawks. The beginning of the sail-off saw St. Mary's jump the start line, which gave Georgetown an early advantage. The Hoyas used the slight lead to their advantage and won the sail-off in the water. Georgetown ended up losing the race out of the water when a protest was filed by St. Mary's. The protest hearing found that a GU boat committed a foul and therefore St. Mary's was awarded the victory. The 12-team championship was a round robin format with each school facing each other once. Georgetown's sailors lost to only one team, Harvard, during the regular competition and completed the three-day regatta with a 10-1 record. The Hoya team consisted of sailors: Brian Bissell (So., Newport Beach, Cailf./Newport Harbor), Ken Ward (So., Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School), Ryan Costello (Jr., Fairhaven, Mass./Tabor Academy), John Camera (Jr., Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy), Leah Williams (So., South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy), Dana Scalere (Jr., Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kelenberg Memorial), Baye Emery (Jr., Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Kate Hewson (Jr., Bay Head, N.J./St. Georges).
The final competition of the year for the Hoyas' sailing team will be the Fleet Racing Nationals to be held at King's Point, N.Y., on June 5-7.
