Gill Earns Fiesta Bowl All-Tournament Team Honors

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 10, 2000) -- The Georgetown University women's volleyball team posted a 1-2 record at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, hosted by Northern Arizona University on Friday-Saturday, September 8-9, in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Hoyas fell to Arkansas-Little Rock by a score of 3-1 but rebounded to defeat Murray State 3-0. Northern Arizona then handed Georgetown a 3-0 loss in the final game of the competition. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was selected to the Fiesta Bowl All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play. It is the second-consecutive all-tournament team honors for Gill as she earned MVP accolades at the Jefferson Cup at UVA. Georgetown now moves to 4-3 on the season.

Jelena Radovanovic and Raquel Sampaio carried Arkansas-Little Rock to a 15-10, 10-15, 15-5, 17-15 win over Georgetown. The story of the match was the serving and blocking by both teams, as the two combined for 17 service aces and 23 team blocks. Both offenses struggled, as the Trojans managed to hit only .197 for the match while the Hoyas hit .178. Radovanovic tallied 15 kills and Sampaio added 11 with four blocks and a .308 attack percentage. The Hoyas were paced by Gill with 15 kills and 10 digs, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) with 14 kills and Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) with 13. GU's senior middle blocker Kaili Stevens (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) tied a tournament four-game record with seven block assists. Freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) had a match-high 50 assists to go with seven digs, two blocks and two kills.

In Saturday's opener, Georgetown rallied after Murray State burst out of the starting blocks quickly. Gill's solid play once again led the Hoyas. Georgetown wore down the Racers, who found it difficult to handle the Hoyas service game and maintain an offensive rhythm. The Hoyas recorded 10 aces and held the Racers to just .134 hitting. Gill tallied 13 kills and seven digs while hitting .387 for the Hoyas, while Carrie Potthast led Murray State with seven kills. Warner and senior middle blocker Meg Troller (Elmhurst, Ill./York) both contributed nine kills, while Stevens added eight. Warner also notched a match-high 12 digs and five service aces, while Troller's numbers included three blocks and Stevens seven digs and two blocks. Ward tallied a match-high 35 assists, six digs, three kills and two blocks.

The final match of the tournament saw a tough Northern Arizona squad win a 15-6, 18-16, 15-7 decision over Georgetown on Saturday evening. Gill stepped up with a match-high 15 kills as well as six digs, three blocks and two assists. Warner scored eight kills, three digs and two blocks, and Troller registered seven kills and a match-high hitting percentage of .462 (seven kills with only one error in 13 attempts).
