WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown's
Dan Ryan (Erdenheim, Pa./William Penn Charter) scored his first collegiate goal with 14 minutes to play as Georgetown defeated Rutgers, 2-1. The Hoyas improved their record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference.
The Scarlet Knights controlled the first half and outshot the Hoyas, 10-1. Todd Moser scored first as Rutgers was able to capitalize off a throw in. The ball was knocked around in front of the goal, deflected by Hoyas' goalkeeper Brian O'Hagan (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers), and finally knocked in by Moser at 5:35.
Georgetown came out strong in the second half. The Hoyas controlled play and got on the board early. Junior Kenny Owens (Washington, D.C./Wilson) evened the score in the game's 61st minute. It was Owens' third goal in the last two games. Owens fired a shot that was deflected by the goalkeeper, but he immediately followed it up and was able to connect on his second attempt. At 76:01, less than two minutes after he entered the game for the first time, Ryan scored the game-winning goal off of Truls Engebretsen's (Oslo, Norway/Berg Videregaaende) corner kick.
Brian O'Hagan had eight saves in goal for the Hoyas. J.D. Martin had two saves for the Scarlet Knights, who fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in Conference play.
Georgetown will play William & Mary on Friday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. at the Old Dominion Tournament.
