Hoyas Defeats Virginia in Three in Jefferson Cup Volleyball Action

The Georgetown University women's volleyball team handed the University of Virginia its first loss of the season with a 3-0 (15-5, 15-9, 15-11) victory at the Jefferson Cup Tournament on Friday, September 1, 2000, in Charlottesville, Va. Georgetown defeated Kentucky in straight games (16-14, 15-12, 15-8). The Hoyas move to 2-0 on the season, and will take on William and Mary on Saturday, September 2, at 9:00 a.m.
Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415 ) and senior outside hitter Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) led the Hoyas in the victory over the Cavaliers. Vtyurina contributed nine kills and 11 digs, while Gill added 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) posted 30 assists and six digs in the match.

The GU women's volleyball team took home the Jefferson Cup Tournament crown today, Saturday, September 2, 2000, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The Hoyas defeated William & Mary 3-1 (15-10, 15-10, 15-18, 15-3) to improve to 3-0 on the year. Georgetown junior outside hitter Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was selected Most Valuable Player, while junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) and senior middle blocker Meg Troller (Elmhurst, Ill./York) were voted to the All-Tournament Team.
Vtyurina notched 22 kills and 15 digs against the Tribe en route to the tournament title. Gill turned in 19 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) chipped in 13 kills and eight digs.
Georgetown returns home to McDonough Gym to play host to the #4 ranked 49ers of Long Beach State on Monday, September 4, at 7:00 p.m.
