Washington, D.C. - Georgetown senior Nate Port (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) scored the game-winning goal, as the Hoyas shutout the defending 2000 NCAA Champions University of Connecticut, 1-0 today. The win improved GU's record to 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in BIG EAST play. Connecticut fell to 8-3-3 overall, 5-1 in the BIG EAST.
The game was very physical from the start, with five players being issued cautions in the first half. The Hoyas outshot the Huskies five to two but neither team was able to score in the first half.
GU came out firing in the second half, scoring just one minute into it. Senior Andy Sole (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escola Americana de Campinas) passed the ball to Port, who dribbled in to score his eighth goal of the season at 46:18.
The Huskies continued to fight, taking four second-half shots, but it was not enough to overtake the Hoyas, who handed UConn its first BIG EAST loss.
GU goalkeeper Brian O'Hagan (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) had another outstanding game in goal for the Hoyas. He made two saves to record the win. Huskie goalie Bryheem Hancock had no saves on the day but blocked a number of Georgetown's corner kicks and crosses to keep the Hoyas to just one goal. Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday, October 23 when they travel to Navy.
