WASHINGTON, D.C.? The third-ranked Georgetown University Sailing Team finished the 2001 fall season by competing in three regattas this past weekend, highlighted by the coed team's fourth place finish at the Atlantic Coast Championship at the College of Charleston.
Five Georgetown sailors competed at the Coed Atlantic Coast Championship, where the Hoyas finished in fourth place with a combined score of 80 points. Brian Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Barbara Hall (Marion, Mass./Tabor Academy) finished second in the "A" division with 31 points, while Curtis Flood (Richmond, Ky./St. George's School), Ken Ward (Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School) and Leah Williams (South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy) finished ninth in the "B" division with 49 points.
Georgetown?s women?s team also competed this weekend at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships at Navy, where they finished in 11th place overall with 282 points. The "B" division team of Elizabeth Ryan (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) and Katherine Penberthy (Rowayton, Conn./The Taft School) finished ninth with 139 points, while the "A" division team of Elizabeth Sampson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Melanie Wood (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneatles) finished in 11th place with 143 points.
GU's freshman sailors posted a strong eighth place finish at the Freshman Atlantic Coast Championships held at Brown. Steve Streit (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Dorothee Bergin (Wellesley, Mass.Wellesley) finished eighth in the "A" division with 111 points, while Cordo Carraher (Oxford, Mass./St. Andrew's School) and Chris Gosselin (Waterbury, Vt./Hotchkiss School) earned 107 points, good for a ninth place finish.
The Hoyas sail again at the Rose Bowl Regatta at USC January 5-6, 2002.
