Swimming & Diving Teams Compete at Rutgers Invitational

The Georgetown University men and women's swimming and diving teams were in action this past weekend at the Rutgers Invite. Several Hoyas qualified for the BIG EAST Championships at the Invite, and sophomore Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y.) set a new school record in the 100-meter fly.

Evangelista completed the 100-meter fly with a time of 51.72 seconds, breaking Zal Devitre's five-year old school record of 52.19 by more than a half second. Bryan's performance also earned him a spot at the BIG EAST Championships.

Four other Hoyas qualified for the BIG EAST Championships this past weekend. Sophomore Lauren Moynihan (South Hadley, Mass.) qualified to compete in the 1650 freestyle, while Junior captain Caragh Moynihan (New Canaan, Conn.) qualified in the 100 free. Caragh will also compete in the 50 free and the 100 fly. In diving, Freshman Kathryn Harrison (Chatham, N.J.) qualified to compete in 1 meter diving, while Freshman Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif.) qualified for the 10 meter Platform.

Five other Hoyas will compete this weekend at the BIG EAST Championships. Junior Chris Lengle (Arlington, Va.) will compete in the 50, 100, and 200-meter freestyle. Junior Will Miller (Farmingdale, N.J.) will compete in the 100-meter back event, while Junior Matt O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz.) will swim in relays. On the women's side, Sophomore Genna McKeel (Tampa, Fla.) will swim in the 50 free and the 100 and 200 meter breast events, while fellow Sophomore Kristie Hunt (Glenview, Ill.) will compete in the 100-meter breast.

The BIG EAST Championships will begin on Thursday, February 15, 2001 and will continue until Saturday, February 17, 2001. The Championships will take place in Long Island, New York.
