Swimming and Diving Split Dual Meet With Drexel

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Georgetown University swimming and diving team split a dual meet with Drexel University on Saturday, January 29. The Hoya women claimed victory (184-116), while the men were defeated 167-128.

The women were led by junior Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) who claimed two first place victories and one second place. Amaro swam to first place finishes in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:38.62), the 200 yard freestyle (1:54.62), and a second place finish in the 500 yard 500 yard freestyle. Liz Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Corrine Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) both grabbed two first place finishes. L. Nugent swam 1:02.46 in the 100 yard backstroke and 2:14.70 in the 200 yard backstroke. Rhodes finished first in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke in times of 1:08.56 and 2:28.52 respectively. Laura Stynk (Nutley, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) swam to first in the 100 yard butterfly (2:12.56) and grabbed second place in the 400 yard IM (4:47.98). Caitlin Colling (Monson, Ma/ Monson High) had an impressive day for the Hoyas as she swam to first in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 55.28. Cori Raffaelli (Oxnard, Calif./Ventura College) had a solid day for the Hoyas, taking many key places. Raffaelli finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:51.81) and third in the 200 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle in times of 2:19.36 and 5:17.32. Freshman Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) finished second in the 100 yard backstroke 1:02.46 and third in the 200 yard backstroke 2:18.30. Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Meghan Maragakes (Doylestown, Pa./ Central Bucks East) each had a second place finish, with C. Nugent in the 200 yard butterfly (2:14.52) and Maragakes in the 50 yard freestyle (25.43). The Hoyas also had two impressive first place finishes in the relays. The 200 yard medley relay composed of L. Nugent, Rhodes, C. Nugent, and Colling finished in a time of 1:54.09. The 200 yard freestyle relay composed of Colling, Raffaelli, Maragakes, and Amaro finished in 1:42.69. Diver Kelcey Moore (Arlington, Va./The Madeira School) rounded out the victory for the Hoyas, finishing second in the 3 meter dive (218.25) and second in the 1 meter dive (214.13).

Despite the men?s loss, there were many impressive performances. Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anslems) swam to two first place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly with times of 53.63 and 1:58.67 respectively. Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (4:54.52) as well as a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.89). Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) had a solid day, swimming to first in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:09.80) and second in the 200 yard butterfly (2:05.44). Mike Bayer (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) grabbed a second place victory in the 50 yard freestyle (22:07). Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High), Daniel Heynen (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), and Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High) each had a third place finish. Rieffel swam 10:23.80 in the 1000 yard freestyle, Heyden in the 100 yard freestyle (51.00), and Walden in the 200 yard backstroke (2:02.43). The men also claimed a first place victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay composed of Bayer, Don Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), C. Ball, and Heynen (1:28.94). Doug Curran (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) represented the Hoyas in the diving, claiming two second place finishes in the 3 meter dive (197.63) and the 1 meter dive (187.50).

Georgetown swimming and diving will next be competing in the BIG EAST Championships February 17-19.
