Swimming & Diving Teams Compete at BIG EAST Championships

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 19) -- The Georgetown University men and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the BIG EAST Championships on February 15-17, 2001 held at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in Hempstead, N.Y. Both teams finished the competition in 13th place, the women garnered 23 points and the men finished with 37.

Day one saw the men's swimmers finish with 25 points. In the 200-yard freestyle medley the Hoya team of Chris Lengle (Jr., Arlington, Va.), Matt O'Connor (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.), Will Miller (Jr., Farmingdale, N.J.) and sophomore Bryan Evangelista (So., Northport, N.Y.) placed 11th with a time of 1:27.05 for 12 team points. The same team also combined for a 12th place finish in the 400-yard medley relay with a 3:33.38, which gave the Hoyas 10 points. To round out the point producers on day one Lengle claimed 14th place (21.21) in the 50-yard freestyle for three points.

On day one for the women the 400 yard medley relay the team of Caragh Moynihan (Jr., New Canaan, Conn.), Kristie Hunt (So., Glenview, Ill.), Lauren Moynihan (So., South Hadley, Mass.) and Genna McKeel (So., Tampa, Fla.) swam a 4:12.04 to garner a 12th place finish and 10 points for GU. In preliminary heats junior C. Moynihan swam a 24.99 and sophomore McKeel finished in 25.54 in the 50-yard freestyle to place 35th and 40th respectively.

In day two the H2Oya men added 12 points to the team total with Miller, O'Connor, Evangelista and Lengle again teaming up to finish 11th in the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.10). B. Evangelista placed 25th in the 100 yard butterfly preliminaries in 51.94. While Lengle in the 200 yard freestyle preliminaries came in 20th place with a 1:42.92. Also during the day Miller swam the 100-yard backstroke prelims in 54.59, good for 29th place.

Freshman Kathryn Harrison (Chatham, N.J.) took 12th place in the 1-meter diving competition, on day two for the women, finishing with 204.90 points and adding five points to the team total. The Hoya foursome of C. Moynihan, Hunt, L. Moynihan and McKeel swam in the 200 yard medley relay and finished 13th (1:57.17) bringing home eight more points for the Hoyas. In some preliminary heats C. Moynihan swam to a 25th place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (59.06) and in the 100 yard breaststroke McKeel finished 38th (1:09.81) and Kristie Hunt placed 43rd (1:10.84).

The final day of competition had the combination of Lengle, Miller, O'Connor and Evangelista swimming a 3:11.60 to finish 12th in the 400 yard freestyle relay and complete the GU men's scoring for the Championships with 10 points. Lengle also touched the wall in 46.68 in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries for 19th place.

The final point producers on the women's side came from the 400 yard freestyle relay team of C. Moynihan, Hunt, L. Moynihan and McKeel who combined for a 13th place finish in 3:43.34. Also on the final day C. Moynihan placed 35th in the 100 yard freestyle preliminaries (54.16). McKeel swam the 200 yard breaststroke preliminaries in 2:26.31 good for the 28th spot and L. Moynihan finished 20th in the 1650 yard freestyle in 17:35.14.
