GU Places Fourth at Navy Women's Spring Intersectional

The Hoyas 12th-ranked women's sailing team placed fourth at the Navy Women's Spring Intersectional finishing ahead of Old Dominion, Hobart/William Smith, and Brown -- three teams then ranked higher than the Hoyas. St. Mary's won the Intersectional finishing with 104 points followed by Tufts (121), Boston University (128), and Georgetown (153).

Saturday, March 10, forecast northwesterly winds at 15-20 knots as the 14 schools set off for 10 races in the Severn River. Four races were completed on Sunday off of Trident Point in Annapolis harbor with southeasterly winds at 10 knots. The Hoyas "A" team, with Elizabeth Sampson (Larchmont, NY/Mamroneck) and Emma Trentmon (St. Leonard, Md./The Calverton School), had eight top-five finishes turning in an overall fifth place finish with 87 points. The "B" team, headed by Baye Emery (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and crewed by both Mimi Elliot (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School) and Shelly Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) finished third with 66 points -- two points behind Old Dominion. The team had five first place finishes but a disqualification in the seventh race cost them 16 points and second place.

The GU women are next scheduled to set sail at the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional at St. Mary's College on March 17-18.
