Hoyas Take Eighth at St. Mary's Women's Intersectional

The women's sailing team took to the water this past weekend at the St. Mary's College Women's Intersectional hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland. This regatta is traditionally one of the toughest of the year. Georgetown finished eighth out of 18 teams with a total of 172 points. St. Mary's College won the overall event with a total of 115 points followed by Connecticut College (118) and University of Hawaii (120). Dartmouth (123) and Brown (133) rounded out the top five.

On Saturday, March 17, four races were completed in each division behind light breezes from the North and then South/Southeast winds at 3-6 knots. The women faced 20-knot winds from the Northwest on Sunday as they completed six races. In the "A" Division the Georgetown tandem of Liz Sampson (Fr., Larchmont, N.Y./Mamroneck) and Emma Trentman (So., St. Leonard, Md./The Calverton School) raced ten times ending the weekend with one win and two other top-five finishes claiming 11th place overall with 105 points. The winning team from ODU had 51 points. The Hoyas had Mimi Elliott (Fr., Couer d'Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School) and Shelly Wentworth (Fr., Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) sailing in the "B" Division. They finished in sixth place with 67 points just one point behind U. Hawaii and 15 points off the victor Boston College. Elliot and Wentworth finished in the top 10 in nine of their 10 races while posting four top-five finishes.

The GU Women are next scheduled to take the waters at the Princeton Women's Open at Princeton on March 24-25.
