WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University men's soccer team has announced that Kenny Owens (Washington, D.C./Wilson) and Mark Manning (Houston, Texas/Kingwood) will serve as captains for the 2001 season. The announcement was made by head coach Keith Tabatznik.
Tabatznik also announced the team's award winners from this past season. Owens was named the team's Most Valuable Player and the team's Offensive Player of the Year. Owens, a junior forward, finished sixth in the BIG EAST in scoring with 11 goals and 23 points. He was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. He now was 21 career goals in three seasons with the Hoyas. Manning, a back, was the team's Defensive Player of the Year. He has started every game the last two seasons for the Hoyas.
Freshman Greg Freeburg (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena Polytechnic) was selected as the team's rookie of the year. The midfielder from California was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team last season and finished third on the club in scoring with 10 points. He had four goals and two assists.
The Hoyas' selected senior Jeff Boehling (Solon, Ohio/Solon) as the team's recipient of the Ricardo Mendoza award, which is given to the soccer player who best exhibits qualities of spirit, leadership and dedication. Boehling started all 18 games this season. He started 77 games in his career at Georgetown.
Tony Soric (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) was selected the group's Most Improved Player. Soric appeared in seven games this season and had a goal and an assist. The sophomore made significant contributions to the team late in the season.
The Georgetown men's soccer team finished its season with a 9-8-1 overall record and a 5-5-1 mark in the BIG EAST.
