The women's tennis team finished their regular season with matches against West Virginia on Thursday April 12 and Pittsburgh on Friday April 13. Both matches were played at West Virginia University. The Hoyas were unable to win either match, falling to West Virginia 6-1 and to Pittsburgh 4-3.
In the match against West Virginia, the Hoyas defaulted the #3 doubles match giving West Virginia the early edge in the doubles competition. Georgetown played solid doubles at #2 but Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Julie Hom (Newton, Mass./Newton South) were defeated 8-6 by WVU's Watkins and Binder. The Hoyas struggled at #1 doubles where Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and Hadley Muckerman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) were defeated 8-3 by Earles and Adams.
With a 1-0 lead from the doubles, Georgetown was again forced to default a match at the #6 singles position. West Virginia put the Hoyas away by taking three more team points quickly. Hom was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Watkins at #5 singles. Muckerman was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Underwood at #4 singles. Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Howell at #3 singles. Marshall fell 6-2, 6-2 to Earles at #1 singles. With West Virginia leading 6-0, Botjer's prevailed at #2 singles as she upset Adams 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). The final score of the match was Georgetown-1, West Virginia-6.
In the match against Pittsburgh, the Hoyas had a chance to claim the doubles point even though they defaulted the #3 doubles match. After a slow start on both courts, the #1 team of Marshall and Muckerman won seven of the last eight games to take their match against Williams and Jafarian 8-4. Botjer and Hom's slow start left them defenseless against Borza and Carlson at #2 doubles, where they fell 8-3. Pittsburgh earned the doubles point by taking the #2 and the #3 doubles matches.
When the singles competition began the Hoyas found themselves behind 2-0 as the #6 singles match was defaulted to Pittsburgh. Hom helped the Hoyas by winning GU's first point on the day, downing Haley Hughes at #5 singles 6-3, 6-1 to make the team score 2-1. Madonia fell to Jafarian 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles. Then Marshall was defeated by Williams at #1 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Pittsburgh had the insurmountable 4th team point. Hoyas' Botjer and Muckerman tightened up the final score as Botjer defeated Borza at #2 singles 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) and Muckerman defeated Carlson 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(8) at #4 singles. Although the Hoyas split the singles matches with Pittsburgh, Pitt came away the winner with the final score of 4-3.
Georgetown closed the 2000-2001 regular season with a 1-7 record in BIG EAST Conference play and a 3-16 overall dual match record. Because Georgetown struggled in Conference play, the Hoyas are not expecting a berth in the Conference Team Championship that is scheduled for April 20-22 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
