GU Sailing Dominates MAISA Team Race - Qualify for Nationals

The Georgetown University Sailing Team won two FJ regattas this weekend, the MAISA Team Race and the Washington College Women's Open. By virtue of their first place finish at the MAISA Team race, Georgetown qualifies for the ICSA Team Race Nationals for the second consecutive year.

The MAISA Race, held at Old Dominion University, saw the Hoyas go undefeated completing the weekend 10-0. Georgetown entered six teams into the race, yet never used the same skipper/crew combination against another school twice. The team of senior Ryan Costello (Fairhaven, Mass./Tabor Academy), senior Dana Scalere (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), and sophomore Shelly Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) was the only trio participating. Also racing were the team of junior Brian Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and freshman Eliza Ryan (Marblehead Mass./Marblehead), as well as junior Ken Ward (Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School) and junior Leah Williams (South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy). The other three pairs were made up of senior John Camera (Duxbury, Mass./Milton Academy) with senior Baye Emery (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), junior Curtis Flood (Richmond, Ky./St. George's School) with senior Gavin Weiss (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy), and senior Raoul Magana (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Loyola) with junior Peter Franz (New York, N.Y./St. Andrew's).

In women's competition, both Hoya teams won their respective divisions in FJ Racing at the Washington College Women's Open in Chestertown, Md. In the A Division, sophomore Mimi Elliot (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School) and Lindsay Bello earned first place. Sophomore Liz Sampson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamroneck) and sophomore Emma Trentman (St. Leonard, Md./The Calverton School) also saw first place victory in the B Division.

Georgetown's final score of 36 was the best performance to date by the women. Both teams won over half of their races and averaged a score below two for the entire regatta.

The Hoyas will compete in three regattas next weekend, April 14-15: the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island, the Admiral's Cup at King's Point, and the New York Maritime Open.
