Hoyas Women's Tennis Drops Match at UConn

APRIL 7, Storrs, Conn.-- The Georgetown University women’s tennis team fell to the University of Connecticut, 4-3, this past Saturday in BIG EAST play. The loss drops the Hoyas to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in BIG EAST competition.

In the doubles competition, the Hoyas received another outstanding performance from the team of Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Julie Hom (Newton, Mass./Newton South). Hom and Botjer improved their BIG EAST doubles record to 4-1 with an 8-4 victory at #2 doubles over Christine Vorvis and Katie Olsen. UConn however tripped up the Hoyas in the other two doubles matches. Trinell Russell and Colleen Connors edged Hoyas Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and Hadley Muckerman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) 8-5 at #1 doubles while Mel Polanco and Candice Jones defeated Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Meredith Bumpass (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Hawken School) 8-5 at #3 doubles. Connecticut claimed the team point for winning the doubles competition.

Down an early point, the Hoyas needed to take four of the six singles matches to gain the victory. Three Hoyas players stepped up right away to give Georgetown the chance it needed. Madonia, Bumpass and Hom continued their winning ways, building on their previous weekend's performances against Rutgers and Providence. Madonia rebounded from an early first set deficit to down UConn team captain Vorvis 7-5,6-1 at #3 singles. Bumpass won her second straight BIG EAST singles match, defeating Olsen 6-1,6-3 in the #5 singles match. Hom also claimed her second straight BIG EAST singles victory, turning in a 6-3,6-1 win over Valerie Morse at #6 singles. UConn put another team point on the scoreboard as Polanco defeated Muckerman 6-2,6-3 at #4 singles. With the Hoyas holding a 3-2 advantage on the scoreboard, only the #1 and #2 singles matches remained. Marshall battled Russell valiantly at #1 singles, but fell short 7-5,7-5. At #2 singles Botjer lost the first set 6-3 to Connors, but fought back to win the second set 7-5. The decisive third set went to Connors 6-2, which allowed UConn to claim a 4-3 victory.

The Hoyas have two matches remaining on their 2000-2001 schedule. Thursday, April 12, the Hoyas take on West Virginia in Morgantown and then on Friday the Hoyas face Pittsburgh also in Morgantown.
