Women' Volleyball Wins 3-1 Decision over Syracuse

10/13/2002 Washington, DC ? Senior outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) posted her 13th double-double of the 2002 season to lead Georgetown University (13-8, 4-2) to a 3-1 (29-31, 30-18, 30-12, 30-28) triumph over Syracuse University (13-8, 2-4) in BIG EAST women?s volleyball action on Sunday, October 13, in McDonough Gym.  Warner tallied a match-high 22 kills and 15 digs on the day.  Freshman outside hitter Kristen Conway led the Orangewomen with 18 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. 

The first game was a back-and-forth affair with the score knotted five times.  The Hoyas stayed in the game with strong blocking, however, the Orangewomen refused to fold and rallied to win the game with a 31-29 score.   GU hit .341 for the game, and Syracuse .218.  Georgetown dominated the second and third games, cruising to 30-18 and 30-12 victories, respectively.  The Hoyas hit a solid .323 for game two, while the Orangewomen posted just .033. 

Georgetown improved its hitting percentage in game three with an outstanding .485 (19 kills with only three errors in 33 attempts, while holding Syracuse to -.115.  It paid off with a 30-12 win. Game four was hotly contested, but the Hoyas were able to put the game (30-28) and match away after SU committed three attack errors in the last four plays. 

Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) recorded one of her best hitting and blocking efforts of the season with a double-double of 14 kills and 10 blocks, including three solo stops.  Albert also hit a sizzling match-high .824 (14 kills with no errors in 17 attempts).

Junior setter Jen Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) handed out a match-high 43 assists in addition to 11 digs and two kills, while freshman outside hitter Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) contributed 13 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Freshman outside hitter Natasha Nguyen (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) added nine kills, four digs and a team-high three service aces to the winning effort.  She also hit.471 for the match. 

Freshman outside hitter Ashley Lancaster (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) chipped in five kills, five blocks and three assists, and sophomore outside hitter Julie Grauert (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit), playing the libero position, donated 13 digs and two assists to the Hoya cause.

Georgetown hit .362 for the match and Syracuse .107.  The Hoyas also held an 11-6 advantage in team blocks.

The Hoyas will have a week off before taking to the road for their next four matches.  GU will play a 7:00 p.m. match at American University on Tuesday, October 22, then travel to Jamaica, N.Y., to take on BIG EAST opponent St. John?s on Friday, October 25.  They close out the weekend with a BIG EAST match against Connecticut on Sunday, October 27.
