WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in four regattas last weekend, taking first at the MAISA Singlehanded Championship and claiming the top prize at the Jesuit Cup. The Hoyas also placed second in the Strom Trysail Regatta and raced to a seventh place finish in the Navy Fall Women?s Regatta.
At the MAISA Singlehanded Championship (Carl Van Dyne Trophy) 16 sailors raced for the top spot and a chance to qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship. No Georgetown sailor had ever won the Singlehanded Championship until freshman Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishops School) sailed to victory, finishing no worse than fifth in a fleet that was considered to be the most skilled in recent memory. In light and shifty conditions Andrew remained unbeaten in his collegiate sailing career. The win qualifies him for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship to be held at the Houston Yacht Club from November 8-10.
Georgetown dominated the field at the Jesuit Cup held in Fordham, winning 15 of the 20 races to finish first overall. Thatcher Spring (Nantucket, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Paulina Szyrmer (Drexel Hill, Pa./The Baldwin School) finished first in A division while Steve Streit (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Colleen Hehir (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber H.S.) took first place in B division. The Hoya women?s team battled through light and shifty winds to jump to a quick start at the Navy Fall Women?s Regatta but a few double digit finishes near the end dropped the squad in the overall standings. After six races Georgetown substituted its freshman and sophomore skippers who performed well in unpredictable racing conditions. In A division Derby Anderson (Anapolis, Md./The Key School) had four top-10 races including three finishes in the top-four.
Thanks to the generosity of Richard DuMoulin (father of Ed DuMoulin ?06) the Georgetown University Sailing Team was able to compete in its first big boat regatta in years. The team sailed on Mr. DuMoulin?s Express 37 and while they had very little experience, the crew acclimated themselves quickly. Finishing second overall, the Hoyas improved with every race. In the future the team may begin competing in the Kennedy and MacMillan regattas.
This weekend the Hoyas will compete in two regattas, the Navy Fall Intersectional and the Washington College Open.
