Georgetown Sailing Finishes Second in St. Mary' Open

9/30/2002

Washington, DC ? The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in five regattas last weekend, taking second place in the St. Mary?s Open.

The St. Mary?s Open was the first doublehanded regatta for Georgetown?s freshman phenoms Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishops School) and Derby Anderson (Anapolis, Md./The Key School).  Andrew and crew Megan O?Neill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) won their division by three points despite poor conditions on Sunday which featured light and shifty winds.  Despite falling in the last two races to Hobart, Campbell and O?Neill clearly dominated the racing.  Anderson sailed well in her first regatta, finishing first in a handful of races and showing potential for sailing A division women?s regattas very soon.  Anderson and crew Shelley Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable H.S.) finished second in B division to Hobart.  The second place finish at the St. Mary?s Open qualifies the Hoyas for the War Memorial regatta later this year.

At the Hood Trophy held at Tufts University, a rough outing for the both Georgetown teams gave the Hoyas an 11th place finish in the field of 18.  Thatcher Spring (Nantucket, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Chris Harvey (Rillton, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) finished in sixth place in B division and the A division team, struggling in high winds, fell to 15th.  The team was coached by John Camera, a 2001 Georgetown graduate.

Sailing in their first J-24 at the MAISA Sloop Champs at Navy, an inexperienced Georgetown squad struggled to finish seventh.  Skipper Tyler Haskell (Newport Beach Calif./Newport Harbor) and his crew of Elizabeth Sampson (Larchmont, N.Y./Momroneck H.S.), Steve Streit (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Berry Kurkland (Sharon, Conn./Hotchkiss School) were bested by the more experienced crews in the field.

Bill Jorch (Northport, N.Y./Northport) competed in the Laser Qualifiers South at Navy, missing the cut for advancing to the district championships by 20 points.  Jorch sailed well in light winds but could not keep up in the 20kt winds that were commonplace on Saturday.

The MAISA Clinic and Regatta was held at Georgetown this weekend for new sailors, run by Georgetown graduate Bill Ward (?96).  Due to the lack of coach boats Coach Callahan was forced to coach from an FJ, actually racing against the other teams.

The Hoyas will be competing in two regattas this weekend, the Tom Curtis Regatta in Georgetown and the MAISA Women?s Singlehanded Champs at Navy.  Andrew Campbell will also represent the team at the Laser Qualifiers this week.
