Newark, Del. ? Senior Anna Kleinsorge (San Francisco, Calif./St. Francis) had an outstanding night on Wednesday, October 30, against the University of Delaware. Kleinsorge posted a match-high seven blocks, including two solos, and a team-high 20 kills, to lead the injury-racked Georgetown University Hoyas to a 3-2 (30-25, 26-30, 24-30, 30-23, 15-8) victory over the Blue Hens on Viera Court on the UD campus. GU accomplished the win without the assistance of two starters, outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) and sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis).
In addition to the kills and blocks, Kleinsorge also hit .486 for the night (20 kills with only three errors in 35 attempts), and had five digs. It was quite a performance for the 6? 3? middle blocker who is just returning to the starting line-up after an injury that sidelined her for several matches.
Freshman outside hitter Ashley Lancaster (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) turned in a season-best performance. Lancaster tallied a career-high 15 kills, as well as three blocks and two assists. Freshmen outside hitters Natasha Nguyen (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) and Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) were solid on both offense and defense for the Hoyas. Nguyen finished with a match-high six service aces in addition to a team-high 15 digs, seven kills and four blocks, while Nelson recorded 10 kills, 11 digs, four assists, three blocks and three aces on the evening.
Sophomore setter Margaret Vernon (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) served up a team-high 48 assists and had eight digs and a block. Vernon also had the match?s best hitting percentage with .750 on the strength of six kills and no errors in eight attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Julie Grauert (Lake Oswego, Calif./Jesuit) ended the match with 10 digs, eight kills and a block.
Jessica Daniels led Delaware with a match-high 21 kills. Georgetown moves to 14-11 overall on the season, while Delaware drops to 9-14. Taylor Govaars added a match-high 17 digs.
Georgetown hit .296 for the match, while holding Delaware to .187. The Hoyas were perfect in the fifth and deciding game with nine kills with no errors in 15 attempts. GU held an 11-6 advantage in total team blocks.
The Hoyas return home to McDonough for a three-match stand, beginning on Saturday, November 2, with a 7:00 p.m. contest against BIG EAST opponent Villanova.
