October 9, 2002 Washington, DC ? The Georgetown University women?s volleyball team extended its winning streak to three matches on Tuesday evening, October 8, with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 31-29) victory over cross-town rival George Washington at the Smith Center. The match was a homecoming for GU head coach Li Liu. Liu, a standout player on the Colonials? volleyball team during the 1993-94 season.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) racked up her 12th double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills and 10 digs to help lead the Hoyas to victory. She also posted a match-high four aces. Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) was simply sensational as she turned an errorless hitting performance. Albert recorded a match-high .833 hitting percentage off 10 kills with no errors in 12 attempts. She was also credited with a match-high five blocks. GW junior Sarah Hokom led all players with 19 kills, while junior Ruth Lazzari provided the Colonials a team-high 14 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) showed no signs of the injury that sidelined her for several games. Nelson finished the match with a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Jen Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) contributed a match-high 31 assists in addition to 12 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Julie Grauert (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit) added a match-high 16 digs. Freshman outside hitter Natasha Nguyen (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) ended the night with eight kills, seven digs and two blocks.
Georgetown (12-7) hit .313 for the match, compared to .176 for George Washington.
The Hoyas return to action this weekend when they host a pair of BIG EAST matches. Notre Dame pays a visit to McDonough Gym on Saturday, October 12, for a 2:00 p.m. match. Then, on Sunday, October 13, Syracuse will play a 1:00 p.m. match against GU.
