The Georgetown University men's soccer team has announced that Brian O'Hagan (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) and Tim McAnally (Mendham, N.J./Delbarton) will serve as captains for the 2002 season. The announcement was made at the team's annual awards banquet held on Friday, February 1.

The team's award winners from the 2001 season were also honored. O'Hagan was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year for posting four shutouts and earning a 1.23 goals against average last season. He was also named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on October 1.

Senior co-captain Kenny Owens (Washington, D.C./Wilson) was named Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row. Owens was second on the 2001 team in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points. One of the top players in the conference, Owens was named to the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team, both in the post and pre-season and was selected as a College Soccer News All-American Honorable Mention. Owens tallied 27 career goals and 14 assists for 68 points and finished his GU career in ninth place on Georgetown's All-Time Leading Scorers list. Owens was selected to participate in the 2002 Umbro Select All-Star Classic, only the third Hoya to do so.

Freshman Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) was selected as Rookie of the Year. Gargan was honored for his efforts in the Hoyas' match against the University of Pennsylvania, where he scored the game-winning goal with just two seconds left to play in regulation. The defender finished the 2001 season with one goal and five assists.

Senior Nate Port (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was selected as the team's Offensive Player of the Year. Port led the Hoyas in scoring last season with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists. He finished the season sixth in scoring in the BIG EAST and was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions. Port wrapped up his GU career with 25 career goals and eight assists for 58 points. He is tied for tenth on Georgetown's All-Time Leading Scorers list.

Sophomore Joseph Paden (Signal Mountain, Tenn./The Baylor School) was named the group's Most Improved Player. Paden appeared in 18 games in 2001 and contributed one assist. The sophomore was a consistent presence on the Hoyas' offense throughout the season.

The Hoyas selected senior Dan Ryan (Erdenheim, Pa./William Penn Charter) as the team's recipient of the Ricardo Mendoza award, given to the soccer player who best exhibits the qualities of spirit, leadership and dedication. Ryan played in 14 games last season for the Hoyas and scored the game-winner in Georgetown's 3-2 overtime win over Howard.

The Hoyas also made significant contributions off the field, placing seven players on the 2000-2001 BIG EAST Academic All-Star List and earning a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic Distinction Award. Port, Ryan, Michael Gross (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights), Andy Sole (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escola Americana de Campinas), Truls Engebretsen (Oslo, Norway/Berg Videregaaende), Peter Finn (Derwood, Md./Magruder), Greg Freeburg (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena Polytechnic) and Tim Hogan (Richmond, Va./Freeman) were all recognized for their academic endeavors.
