The women's tennis team opened the spring 2002 season with two matches against local teams this past weekend. On Saturday the Hoyas faced George Washington, losing 5-2. On Sunday the Hoyas visited Maryland and were turned away 7-0. The Hoyas are now 0-2 in dual match play for the 2002 spring season.
In the Saturday match against George Washington, the Hoyas were facing familiar personnel. The previous Hoya-Colonial match-up occurred this past fall at the ECAC Team Invitational Tournament. That match resulted in a 5-2 GW victory, so the Hoyas were hoping for an improved performance to start the spring off right. And in the doubles competition, the Hoyas did just that, starting off solidly in two of the three matches. At #3 doubles Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Stephanie Sutton (Arlington, Texas/(Sam Houston State)) defeated Natasha Bode and Sevla Gionca 9-7. At #1 doubles Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and Chelsea Kammerer (Deerfield, Ill./ (Michigan)) defeated Lindy First and Tracey Wei 9-8(4). At #2 doubles, Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Trina Snow (Sartell, Minn./Sartell) fell behind two breaks at the start but made up the deficit to get to 7-7. GW's Genscoy and Statsny prevailed 9-7. Back in the fall ECAC match, the Hoyas were only able to win 12 games as compared to GW's 24. In today's match the Hoyas surpassed their fall games total and claimed 27 to GW's 23. The Hoyas proudly took a 1-0 lead into the singles competition.
In the singles competition, GW showed the same strength that carried them to victory in the fall match-up. At #2 singles, Botjer played well but was outplayed by Genscoy and was defeated 6-2, 6-0. At #3 singles, Snow was defeated by Tracey Wei 6-2, 6-2. At #1 singles Bartell fell to Lindy First 6-4, 6-1. GW captured the match as Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Natasha Bode. GU responded as Liora Gelblum (Cupertina, Calif./Monta Vista) won a three-hour battle against Sevla Gionca 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The final match of the day saw Marshall drop a third set tiebreaker and the match at #6 singles to Katarina Statsny 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3). The final score of the match was Georgetown-2, GW-5.
In the Sunday match against the Maryland Terrapins, the Hoyas faced a powerhouse squad anchored by the #5 and #16 ranked singles players in the East. In doubles the Hoyas won a total of three games. The #2 Hoyas doubles team of Bartell and Snow showed great determination against Pam Floro and Chloe Chavardes, falling 8-3. Maryland won the doubles point without a serious threat from Georgetown.
In singles Snow fell to Marta Jedrzejak at #4 singles 6-0, 6-0. Madonia played a solid second set against Chloe Chavardes, but fell 6-1,6-3 at #5 singles. Gelblum fell to Pam Floro 6-0, 6-2 at #3. Marshall was defeated by Emily DeCamilla at #6 singles 6-3, 6-2. Botjer was defeated by #16 Emily Marker at #2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Bartell played a solid match against #1 Delila Causevic, losing 6-2, 6-2.
Next up for the Hoyas is a dual match against James Madison to be played at the Montclair Tennis Bubble in Dumfries, VA Sunday February 10 at 12:45 p.m.
