Third Ranked Coed Sailing Finishes Well in Weekend Regattas

March 27, 2002

Washington, D.C.--The third-ranked coed sailing team and the twelfth-ranked women?s team, competed in seven regattas over the past two weekends.

The Hoyas made a respectable showing at the Truxton Umstead four-division regatta, held March 16 and 17 at Navy. Of the twenty schools competing, Georgetown finished eighth overall. The Hoyas? best performance came from seniors Ken Ward (Tampa, Fla./The Hotchkiss School) and Leah Williams (South Dartmouth, Mass./Tabor Academy), who took fourth place in the A division with 122 points. In the B division, seniors Brian Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Curtis Flood (Richmond, Ky./St. George's School), Melanie Wood (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles), and Kat Penberthy (Rowayton, Conn./TheTaft School) finished in sixth place with 129 points. High winds held back Hoya squads in the C and D divisions, however, as sophomore Derek Webster (Irvine, Calif./University High School) and freshman Bill Jorch (Northport N.Y./Northport) compiled 172 points for fourteenth place in the C division, and sophomore Tyler Haskell (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) finished with 130 points for eighth place in the D division.

While the coed squad fought winds at Truxton Umstead, the women?s team cruised past a number of top ten ranked schools into fourth place at the St. Mary?s Women?s Intersectional with 124 total points. 54 of these points came from the A-division duo of juniors Mimi Elliot (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School) and Shelly Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable), whose total was good enough for third place in their division. Meanwhile, the B division trio of junior Elizabeth Sampson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamroneck), sophomore Gabi Maguire (Amherst, Mass./Amherst), and freshman Cordo Carraher (Oxford, Mass./St. Andrews School) sailed into seventh place with 70 points.

The same weekend, two Hoya squads sent to the Salisbury State Open, tallied just 39 points for second place in the eight-team field. Pat Donegan (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) and Lindsay Bello (Rye, N.Y./Rye) finished second in the A Division, while Scott Driskel (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and Paulina Szyrmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished second in the B Division.

At the Southern New England Team Race held at Harvard and MIT, Haskell, Jorch, Maguire, Barbara Hall (Marion, Mass./Tabor Academy), Thatcher Spring (Nantucket, Mass./Belmont Hill) and Chris Harvey (Rillton, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) posted a sixth place finish against some of the best sailors in the Northeast.

In the last coed regatta before the national qualifiers on April 6th and 7th, the Hoyas turned in a number one performance at the Old Dominion Team Race, finishing 15-2. Bissell, Ward, Williams, Wood, Flood, Penberthy, Eliza Ryan (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), Jeff Chang (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and Dorothee Bergin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) all battled high winds and waves to defeat the #2 ranked Monarchs at home.

GU posted a strong second place finish at the MAISA/SAISA event where the Hoyas earned 60 points off of Mimi Elliott (Coeur d?Alene, Idaho/The Hotchkiss School), Shelly Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable), Elizabeth Sampson (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Emilie Lincoln (New York, N.Y./The Hewitt School).

The Hoyas finished off the weekend at the Owen Trophy Regatta, held at the Coast Guard Academy. Georgetown finished in eighth place overall with 223 points. The A Division team of Byron LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) and Emma Trentman (St. Leonard, Md./The Calverton School) earned 110 points and a sixth place finish, while Steve Streit (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Colleen Hehir, the B Division team, took seventh place with 113 points.

Georgetown will be back in action on April 6-7 when they compete at the Maryland Spring Invite and the MAISA Team Race Championships.
