The women's tennis team split matches in South Florida this week. On Monday March 4 the Hoyas defeated the University of St. Thomas 6-1. On Wednesday the Hoyas were defeated by Florida Atlantic University 7-0.

In the match against St. Thomas, the Georgetown doubles teams swept the three matches in the opening doubles competition, surrendering only three games in the process. In the singles competition, the Hoyas clinched the match with 6-0,6-0 victories by Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and a default win from Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley). The final score on the day was Georgetown-6, St. Thomas-1 as St. Thomas' Sabaea Carrington played a fine match to defeat Hoya Liora Gelblum (Cupertina, Calif./Monta Vista) 7-6,6-2.

In the match against Florida Atlantic, the Hoyas received solid doubles play from the teams of Caroline Marshall and Chelsea Kammerer (Deerfield, Ill./ (Michigan)) and Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Monisha Ghia. Marshall and Kammerer fell behind 3-0 but worked hard to get back to 4-4 before FAU prevailed. Botjer and Ghia started strongly and finished the same way to win at #3 doubles. In singles the Hoyas received solid play from Gelblum at #1, Botjer at #3, Marshall at #4 and Madonia at #6, but the best match of the day was Bartell's loss to Aguirre-Gomez 4-6,6-3,7-6(3).

Next week the Hoyas travel to Providence, RI to take on the Providence College Friars in the opening BIG EAST Conference dual match of 2002.
