Men' Soccer Opens Season with 3-1 Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown?s men?s soccer team opened its season against George Washington in the D.C. College Cup held on Reeves Field on American University?s campus. The Hoyas lost 3-1 after taking an early 1-0 lead.



The game began with a yellow card issued to George Washington in the first :11 seconds of the game. The Hoyas? Kevin Sindelar (Potomac, Md./ Churchill) netted the opening goal of the 2002 season for Georgetown 8:36 into the first half. A pass from Peter Fusz (St. Louis, Mo./ Chaminade Prep) across the field to David Eder (Glencoe, Ill./ New Trier (DePaul)) set up the scoring play. GU controlled possession through most of the first half led by midfielder Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./ Chestnut Hill Academy). GWU tied the contest late in the period with a long shot from Matthew Osborne at the 39:09 mark.GU outshot GWU 12-8 in the second stanza but was unable to convert any scoring chances. A long scoring run by GWU broke the 1-1 tie when Arnar Johnson hit his first of the season in the 80th minute. After a foul GWU?s Osborne added one more goal eight minutes later to end the day?s scoring.Georgetown goalie Brian O?Hagan (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) allowed all three goals and had one save. The Hoyas will suit up again on Sunday, September 1 at 2:30 p.m. against American University in round two of the D.C. Soccer Classic at American.
