Washington, DC - The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in three regattas this weekend. At the Navy Laser Open 28 sailors competed in 15 races over two days. Freshman Andrew Campbell stole the show in his first collegiate regatta, winning 10 of the 15 races and finishing first in seven of the first eight races. The win qualifies Campbell for the MAISA singlehanded championships where he can earn a spot at Nationals by finishing in the top three. Georgetown?s other entry, junior Bill Jorch struggled early but finished in the top half of the regatta with a determined rally on the second day.
The Riley Cup held at old Dominion has been dominated by the Hoyas in the past. Georgetown has taken first place four years in a row but had to settle for second this time around after a hard fought finish that went down to the final races. Senior Mimi Elliot and junior Paulina Szyrmer finished only one point out of first place while sophomore Steve Streit and junior Collen Hehir pushed to the end, taking two of the last three races in the A division.
In Dartmouth at the Captain Hurst Bowl, 24 teams entered the competition. At the half way point of the regatta the Hoyas were placed fifth overall, only a few points separating them from second place, but both divisions struggled in the races on the second day and the team dropped to 12th place. Tyler Haskell and Megan O?Neill placed ninth in the A division with 133 points while Thatcher Spring and Barbara Hall captured the 16th spot in the B division with 173 points.
