Georgetown Wins Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament

Charlottesville, VA ? The Georgetown University women?s volleyball team defeated the University of Virginia 3-1 (32-30, 26-30, 30-27, 30-28) in the final match of the 2002 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament on Saturday evening, September 7, at University Hall in Charlottesville, Va. The victory earned the Hoyas the tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record. In addition, senior middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge (San Francisco Calif./St. Francis) was named the tournament?s Most Valuable Player. Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) and sophomore outside hitter Julie Grauert (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit) joined Kleinsorge on the All-Tournament team. Georgetown improves to 4-2 on the season.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) led Georgetown in the UVA victory. Warner recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Kleinsorge and Albert chipped in 11 kills apiece. Grauert added 17 digs, while sophomore Margaret Vernon (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) stepped up with 28 assists. Freshman Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) posted nine kills and 12 digs on the evening, and Natasha Nguyen (El Sugundo, Calif./El Sugundo) tallied nine kills and eight digs. Junior setter Jen Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) had 21 assists and seven digs in just two games.

The Hoyas opened the tournament with a 3-0 (30-10, 30-26, 30-27) win over William & Mary on Friday, September 6. Kleinsorge led both squads with 12 kills, while Warner and Nelson each provided nine kills. Nguyen ended the three-game match with eight kills, five assists and two blocks, and Albert contributed six kills, three blocks and an ace. Vernon served up a match-best 28 assists to go with five kills and four digs.

Georgetown defeated the College of Charleston 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-26) in its second match of the tournament. The Hoyas hit .305 in the match with Kleinsorge and Albert leading the way with sizzling .476 hitting percentages. Kleinsorge notched 12 kills and four blocks, while Albert drilled 10 kills with no errors and added four blocks. Nguyen and Nelson also reached double figures in kills with 12 and 11 respectively. Nguyen made hers a double-double by registering 10 digs. Ward dished out 29 assists and had nine digs.

Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday, September 8, when the University of Maryland pays a visit to McDonough for a at 7:00 p.m. match.
