WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown?s young Hoya women?s tennis squad was shut-out by a veteran GW Colonial squad Friday afternoon at the McDonough Courts. The Hoyas competed in spirited fashion but were unable to fend off the GW poise and consistency.
In the doubles competition that started the match, the Hoyas found themselves behind early on all three courts. The second court with Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./ Torrey Pines) and Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./ Immaculate Heart Academy) found their stride midway through the pro-set, but fell 8-4. The #3 team of Nora Gardner (Greenwich, Conn./ Deerfield Academy (Mass.)) and Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius Prep (Chicago)) also dropped their match by an 8-4 score.
In singles play Georgetown provided stiff resistance, but could not get a match win. At #1 singles Bartell fell in a third set tiebreaker to Nazli Genscoy, while at #5 singles Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn.) also dropped a third set tiebreaker.
The Hoyas travel to Norfolk, Va. next weekend to compete in the Old Point National Bank Championships sponsored by Old Dominion University. Play begins Friday morning and continues through the weekend with the finals scheduled for Sunday.
