Georgetown Drops Villanova in Men's Soccer

10/15/2003

Box Score

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Philadelphia native Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) made his return to the Delaware Valley a memorable one by scoring a goal that sparked Georgetown (5-7-2 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) to a 2-0 Big East Conference victory over Villanova (7-6-1 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) on Wednesday afternoon.

On an afternoon where wind gusts reached 50 miles per hour, it was difficult for both sides to guide long shots. Yet Jonathan Lopuski nearly got Villanova on the scoreboard first in the fourth minute when he blasted a shot from 25 yards out. However, Georgetown goalkeeper Tim Hogan (Richmond, Va./ Freeman) got a hand on the ball and deflected it over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.

Although Villanova dominated much of the early action, it was Georgetown that cashed in a scoring opportunity. Trevor Goodrich (Palo Alto, Calif./ Palo Alto) won a ball in the right corner and fired a nice cross to Gargan near the top of the box. Gargan drilled a low shot past Wildcat keeper Craig Bald at 24:23 to stake the Hoyas to a lead.

The contest remained 1-0 at intermission.

Both teams had scoring chances early in the second half but failed to convert. Villanova's best chance to knot the game came in the 80th minute when the 'Cats were awarded a free kick two yards outside the box. But the Hoyas wall did a nice job of allowing Hogan to see the shot and he made the save on a shot off the foot of senior Scott Rodemer.

A Georgetown counter attack as Villanova pressed for the tying score accounted for the final tally. Ricky Schramm (East Chester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) set up Danny McAnally (Mendham, N.J./ Delbarton) in the box and McAnally deposited the ball in the right corner of the net to secure the Hoyas victory.

Hogan earned the shutout by making seven saves. Bald also was credited with seven saves.

Next up for Georgetown is a home game, where the Hoyas take on Syracuse on Saturday, October 18th, in a contest that begins at 1:00 p.m.
