10/25/2003

Box Score

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ ? The Seton Hall men's soccer team defeated Georgetown, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The win moves the Pirates to 7-4-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown drops to 6-8-2 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

The Pirates struck first in the 15th minute when junior Matt Salotti volleyed in a goal from six yards out. The play was set up by some nice touch passing in the box from Laventure and freshman Sacha Kljestan . Laventure and Salotti connected again to give SHU a 2-0 lead before the half at 42:01, when Salotti lobbed a ball into the box that found Laventure for the header.

Georgetown cut the lead in half when freshman Daniel Grasso (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) picked up a rebound off of sophomore Danny McAnally's (Mendham, N.J./ Delbarto) shot at 50:30. Sophomore Boris Pardo appeared to stop McAnally's initial shot, but it squirted free to Grasso inside six yards who put the shot in the open net.

Laventure sealed the win for Seton Hall with his second goal of the day at 70:30. Senior Luke Vercollone picked up the ball and made a nice spin move to get free and lifted a cross to Laventure, who headed it in to give the Pirates a two-goal cushion.

Senior goalkeeper Tim Hogan (Richmond, Va./ Freeman) made five saves for Georgetown, including two stops in the first half from point-blank that helped keep the Hoyas close on the scoreboard. Pardo made three saves for the win, as Georgetown was outshot 15-11.

The Hoyas take on Navy on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and return home on Saturday, November 1st, to host Connecticut at 1 p.m. and celebrate 50 years of men?s soccer on the Hilltop.
