WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Hoyas of Georgetown University (5-2) fended off a second half assault by Loyola College (3-5) to pull out a 70-53 win. All-America candidate Rebbekah Brunson (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md./ Oxon Hill) put up game and career highs in both points and rebounds with 31 and 21, respectively, earning her 36th career double-double.
Georgetown started the second half off strong but slowed slightly as the Greyhounds? Lindsay Cobb went on a scoring streak, hitting two treys and six shots from the field. Strong rebounding by Brunson and teammates Varda Tamoulianis (R-Sr., Moscow, Russia/Academy of Labour and Social Relations) and Carmen Bruce (So., Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) helped the Hoyas regain control. With 16 minutes to play Brunson scored 14 straight points over the next seven minutes to help keep the Greyhounds at bay. After L.C. clawed within nine with four minutes to play the Hoya defense held the Greyhounds without a basket the rest of the way. The Hoyas displayed stellar shooting touch from the free throw line, hitting 8 of 10 in the second half alone.
Georgetown turned up the pressure from the very beginning of the game, hitting Loyola with strong defense, but had trouble getting shots to fall. Turnovers plagued both teams throughout the first half, but as the Hoyas found the basket they pulled away from their opponent and ended the half with a 38-20 advantage.
The Hoyas will face St. Francis College Monday, Dec. 22 at 1:00 p.m. for their final home game of 2003 before heading to San Diego, California for the Surf-N-Slam Tournament at the University of San Diego.
