WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in two regattas this weekend, finishing first in the ODU Triad and taking second spot in the Charleston Women?s Spring Intersectional.
The ODU Triad is a regatta where the top six boats from St. Mary?s, Old Dominion and Georgetown compete in fleet racing and team racing. On the first day 18 boats competed in seven races. Georgetown?s fleet racers did not perform as well as expected but were saved by the stellar performances of Bill Jorch (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Gabi Maguire (Amherst, Mass./Amherst HS) who took two of the final three races to finish second overall. Due to some scheduling conflicts, Georgetown fielded a relatively inexperienced sixth boat and while they struggled they were able to earn two top 10 finishes.
In team racing, Georgetown?s top team went undefeated while the second boat was able to secure key victories over St. Mary?s and ODU. Many thanks to Curtis Flood ?02 for coaching the team at ODU.
At Charleston in the Women?s Spring Intersectional, the women kicked off the season in style, placing second in an extremely strong field of racers. ODU and Brown, ranked number one and number two in the country, sent their top teams while host Charleston is notorious for being strong at home. In A division, Cordo Carraher (Oxford, Md./St. Andrews School) and Sophie Cowan (Blue Hill, Maine/Phillips Academy Andover) sailed together for the first time and had a number of great races, fighting for top spot in every race. In B division Derby Anderson (Anapolis, Md./The Key School) and Megan O?Neill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei), also paired together for the first time, maintained great boat speed and made some fantastic moves, finished just one point shy of first.
Many thanks to Peter King ?01 who came out both days to cheer for the Hoyas.
In other sailing news, freshman Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishops School), fresh off being named 2002 US Sailing Male Athlete of the Year, finished third at the Miami Olympic Classes regatta in the laser class. Former Hoya and All-American Christina Feldman ?98 also competed in Miami in the Europe Class, finishing 11th out of 25 boats. Feldman was the third place American athlete.
