WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University men's soccer head coach Keith Tabatznik announced that Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) and Carl Skanderup (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) will be the Hoya team captains for the 2003 season. The announcement was made at the team?s annual award banquet held Saturday, February 8.
Also announced at the banquet were the team award winners for the 2002 season. Leading the award recipients was freshman back Jeff Curtin (Oreland, Pa./ Germantown Academy) who received the team Most Valuable Player award and Freshman of the Year honors. It has been a productive off-season for Curtin on the awards trail as he was named the 2002 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in November and received All Freshman First Team honors from collegesoccernews.com and Freshman All American accolades from Soccer Times in January.
Next season?s team co-captain Gargan was named Georgetown?s top Defensive Player of the Year after being named the Freshman of the Year last season. In 2002 the defensive minded Gargan also hit for one goal and two assists. Garnering the Most Improved Player award was junior Paul Brandley (Larchmont, N.Y./ Mamaroneck). Brandley began his third season with only two games of experience but ended the year starting two contests and playing in 17. He scored two goals and logged one assist in 2003.
Two freshmen combined to win the Offensive Player of the Year Award. Benjamin Jefferson-Dow (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and Kemmons Feldman (Eden Prarie, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) tied for the team lead in points during their first seasons, each totaling 13 points. Feldman was the Hoyas? leading goal producer, posting six goals on the season, and had one assist. Fellow mate Jefferson-Dow split his total points during the year hitting four goals and delivering five assists.
The Hoyas selected senior Tim McAnally (Mendham, N.J./ Delbarton) as the team's recipient of the Ricardo Mendoza award, given to the soccer player who best exhibits the qualities of spirit, leadership and dedication. McAnally played in four games last season for the Hoyas.
The Georgetown men's soccer team finished its season with an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-4-1 mark in the BIG EAST, including a run to the BIG EAST Championship semi-finals.
