3/4/2003 WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in two regattas last weekend, finishing second in the Georgetown Team Race and fourth at the Old Dominion South Open.
In the Georgetown Team Race, the Hoyas unveiled their new full color main and jib racing sails and raced well despite poor weather conditions and just two practices in three weeks. The team lost two close races to St. Mary?s and one to Navy. GUST also held its second parents weekend, hosting over thirty parents who participated in a number of activities at Georgetown.
In the Old Dominion South Open, the first qualifier for the America Trophy, the top sailors from across the country competed for top spot. Georgetown, already qualified for the America Trophy with a third place finish in the War Memorial in the fall, posted excellent finishes all weekend. In A division, women?s team sailors Cordo Carraher (Oxford, Md. / St. Andrews School) and Emma Trentman (St. Leonard, Md. / The Calverton School) sailed quite well, winning a number of races and finishing no worse than 10th. B division skipper Chris Gosselin (Waterbury, Vermont / Hotchkiss School) was driving in only his second regatta, doing quite well overall. Gosselin and crew Kelly Lanzara (Great Falls, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) won a race and finished only a few points out of fifth in their division.
Next weekend the team will compete in four regattas including the Navy Spring Women?s Intersectional, the St. Mary?s Team Race, the Admiral Moore at SUNY Maritime and the Ice Free Open at Christopher Newport.
The Coed team is currently ranked 14th in the country while the women?s team is currently ranked second in the nation.
