WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in four regattas over the last two weekends.
The Hoyas captured the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional by a comfortable margin, placed second in the Old Dominion Team Race and UMBC Spring Regatta, and finished seventh out of 16 teams in the Owen Trophy at Kings Point.
The Georgetown women captured an impressive victory at the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional, competing against co-ed squads from all the other teams. In A division, Derby Anderson (Anapolis, Md./The Key School) and Shelley Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) won a number of races en route to a solid division win.
In the Old Dominion Team Race Georgetown competed in an exceptionally tough field, relying on an excellent second day of sailing to advance to the final four. After round one the Hoyas were 3-4 and in sixth place overall. A handful of close losses put the Hoyas in a hole that would require a near perfect round two finish first. Near perfect is how Georgetown sailed, going 6-1 with the sole loss coming at the finish line to St. Mary?s, the eventual winner. In the final four the Hoyas routed St. Mary?s in the opening race but lost to USC before defeating Charleston for second place overall.
The UMBC Spring Regatta proved to be a great regatta for Georgetown?s new sailors. In A division, Kyle Bergeron (Wellesley, Calif./Belmont Hill School) and Catherine Bennet (Chester, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) sailed well, finishing just one point out of first. In B division, Dan Monico (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Libby Perkowski (Whitehouse, N.J./Phillips Academy) sailed well en route to a second place finish. This was the first time that Monico had skippered in a college regatta.
At the Owen Trophy at Kings Point, Georgetown faced great competition in both divisions. Though Georgetown struggled in some races, both A and B division teams remained within striking distance of the lead. The Hoyas had some trouble in Vanguard 15s since they don?t sail them very often, but GU crews did very well in the FJs, taking seventh place overall.
This weekend the Hoyas compete in three regattas. Georgetown races in the MAISA Team Race at New York Maritime, competes in the Maryland Spring Regatta at the Severn Sailing Association, and goes for first place in the Washington College Women?s Regatta.
