NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - On Sunday, the Georgetown heavyweights braved sleet and snow to face Rutgers, ranked #20 in the USRowing Coaches Poll. With two turns in its course, the Raritan River, home of the Scarlet Knights, is unique in that one crew begins the race three-quarters of a length behind.
In the varsity eight event, the Hoyas, starting behind Rutgers, began to patiently eat away at the early advantage. With 1500 meters to go in the race, the Georgetown eight took its first move, however, the Hoyas were never able to settle into an aggressive rhythm. Rutgers responded and steadily moved away from Georgetown through the middle of the race. With 500 meters to go, the Hoyas started their sprint in a dogged attempt to cut the lead of the Scarlet Knights. In the end, Rutgers crossed the finish line five seconds ahead of the varsity eight.
In the day's closest race, the second varsity eight came up two seconds behind Rutgers. Off the start the Rutgers eight added a small margin to the lead they received because of the staggered start. As the boats approached the end of the first 500, Georgetown started pulling closer to the Scarlet Knights. The Hoyas drew to less than a quarter of a length with 800 meters to go until the Rutgers squad started to slowly move out on the Hoyas. Despite a strong sprint from Georgetown, Rutgers held on to win by two-thirds of a boatlength, in a time 5:41 to Georgetown's 5:43.
In the other two races of the day, the Hoya varsity four lost by five seconds, and the freshmen finished twelve seconds behind the Scarlet Knights.
The heavyweight?s next race is Saturday, April 5 in Princeton, New Jersey against #6 Cornell.
