WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in six regattas over the last two weeks, winning the Robert P. Arrigan Memorial Regatta and finishing second at the SUNY Maritime Spring Open. Georgetown also racked up fourth, fifth, seventh, and 10th place finishes in other regattas.
In the MAISA Women?s Championships at Navy, eight teams vied for top spot with the top-two qualifying for Nationals. The regatta started off well in A division as freshman skipper Derby Anderson (Anapolis, Md./The Key School) and senior crew Shelley Wentworth (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) went 1,2,1 in their first three races, but the duo cooled, finishing seven points out of second. B. division was a struggle all weekend, as the Hoyas used three different pairs but failed to find the right combination for victory. A fifth place finish kept the Hoyas out of the ICSA Women?s Nationals.
At the Robert P. Arrigan Memorial Regatta at Georgetown, the Hoyas finished first for the fifth straight year. Georgetown battled St. Mary?s in each race and never led by more than 15 points at any time. Judge and Mrs. Arrigan were in attendance all weekend and treated the teams to dinner at the Faculty Club.
Racing in the SUNY Maritime Spring Open, the Hoyas got a good opportunity to race in the 420s. Both divisions won a number of races, but lacked the consistency to upend Hobart, claiming second place instead.
At the Moody Trophy at URI the Hoyas sailed to a fourth place finish, losing a few tight races in both divisions to cede a top-three spot.
In the Admirals Cup at Kings Point the Hoyas struggled through tough conditions, sailing well in both A and B division but struggling in C. Sunday?s light wind and strong current challenged A and B division, allowing the C team to gain some ground, but Georgetown finished the regatta in seventh place.
Georgetown competed in the Dellenbaugh Women?s Regatta, racing for the first time at Brown. Some decent races and two B division victories showed promise, but too many double-digit finishes dropped the Hoyas to 10th.
Georgetown sailing competes in one regatta this weekend, racing in the America Trophy at St. Mary?s. The top three teams qualify for Nationals.
