April 7, 2003 WASHINGTON, D.C. ? This is the fourth year in a row that Georgetown has qualified for the ICSA Team Nationals.
In other action Georgetown finished second in both the Maryland Spring Open and the Washington College Women?s Regatta.
At the MAISA Team Championship Georgetown faced difficult conditions, racing in light air and with a strong current. The Hoyas struggled against Hobart and St. Mary?s who handily defeated Georgetown early on. The team struggled against Kings Point, Navy, and Washington College but were able to take the lead in each race right before the finish.
The second round robin began late Saturday as Georgetown lost the first race to Hobart to finish the day at four wins and three losses. A ruling from the judges wiped the race against Navy, dropping Georgetown to 3-3 on the day and setting up two races to be re-sailed in the final day of competition (the other being against Old Dominion due to committee error).
On Sunday the breeze picked up to 15-25 mph and the weather turned quite cold. In the first race Georgetown lost to Kings Point but due to a Hoya boat breaking down on the first leg a re-sail was ordered. The team rolled to victory over Navy and Washington College but some tactical errors against St. Mary?s led to a loss. In order to qualify for the final four Georgetown faced the daunting task of sweeping the next five races.
Undeterred, Georgetown went out and beat SUNY and sweeping Old Dominion in both races, then winning the re-sails against Navy and Kings Point to storm to the final four with a 10-4 record.
In the first race of the final Georgetown downed Hobart while Old Dominion beat St. Mary?s. Georgetown needed just one more win to clinch a spot at nationals, doing so by outpacing St. Mary?s next. Tied for first, Georgetown dropped its final race to ODU, giving St. Mary?s sole possession of first.
In the end the race proved quite a comeback for the Hoyas. Seven different crews throughout the weekend led the Hoyas to second place and the Hoya skippers sailed particularly well on the second day. Georgetown was the only squad with three skippers who had never competed at the MAISA Team Race Championship before and the only team to start a freshman skipper, Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishops School).
Nationals will be held June 5-7 in Detroit, Mich.
At the Maryland Spring Open the Hoyas once again nearly beat St. Mary?s but settled for a strong second place finish. In only his second regatta, skipper Chris Gosselin (Waterbury, Vermont/Hotchkiss School) and crew Kendall Krummenacher (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute St. Louis Country Day) sailed well to earn first place honors in B division.
In the Washington College Women?s Regatta Georgetown placed second behind Hobart, racing to an impressive finish. Eliza Ryan (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) and Sophie Cowan (Blue Hill, Maine/Phillips Academy Andover) sailed excellently, defeating the #1 sailor from Hobart/William Smith en route to an A division victory.
Next weekend Georgetown competes in five regattas including the Arrigan Regatta at Georgetown, the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island, the Dellenbaugh Women?s Regatta at Brown, the Admirals Cup at Kings Point, and the NY Maritime Spring Regatta at SUNY Maritime.
