Two More Student-Athletes Commit to Play Volleyball for the Hoyas This Fall

June 17, 2003 WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University Head Coach Li Liu announced that two more student-athletes have committed to attend Georgetown and play volleyball for the Hoyas in the fall of 2003.  Outside hitter Rachel Barton (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School) and middle blocker Kerry O?Keefe (San Gabriel, Calif./ Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) will join the GU line-up this fall.

Barton, a 6? 3? outside hitter from Marietta, Ga., played both volleyball and tennis at The Walker School.  She began playing on the junior varsity squad where she was the captain as well as the Most Valuable Player.  Barton stepped up to varsity as a sophomore (2000) and was named captain during her junior and senior years in 2001 and 2002.  She earned All-Area as well as Area Player of the Year three straight seasons (2000, 2001 and 2002).  A member of the Cobb-Atlanta Junior Olympic Power Team, Barton garnered All-Cobb County Honorable Mention (2000-2002), Most Valuable Player (2002) and Best Offensive Player accolades (2001 and 2002).  Barton also played on The Walker School?s varsity tennis team from 2000-2002.  The team went undefeated (23-0) and won the 2003 AA State Championship.

In addition, Barton excelled in the classroom.  She earned Headmaster? List honors and the AATG National German Exam and Wofford Scholar Awards.  Barton, an AP Scholar with Honors, earned a Silver Medal at the German State Convention.  She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Math and German Honor Societies.

O?Keefe attended the University of Southern California her freshman year, although she did not play volleyball for USC.  She played varsity volleyball at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in San Gabriel, Calif., and club volleyball in the Mission League.  Voted the Most Valuable Player of the Mission League, O?Keefe was also named Player of the Year by the Glendale News-Press in 2003.  She earned All-League and All-CIF First Team honors in 2003 in addition to being selected as All-Tournament Player at the Arcadia Invitational Tournament.

Like Barton, O?Keefe is an excellent student.  She earned First Honors (4.0 or above) her sophomore, junior and senior years and was selected CIF Scholar Athlete as a junior. O?Keefe is a member of the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation as well as Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society.
